With the advent of the pervasive Internet, social media platforms have provided ample opportunities for users to engage in various activities ranging from creating funny and entertaining content to serious political discussions. These platforms have revolutionized the way people communicate by enabling individuals from diverse backgrounds to connect, share ideas, and engage in discussions on a global scale. According to a report by the Pew Research Center, 72% of adults in India use at least one social media platform, highlighting the widespread influence of these digital spaces on democratic discourse.

From Facebook and Twitter to Instagram and Reddit, social media platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for social interactions, civic engagement, and political expression, playing a pivotal role in shaping socio-political discourse. A few of the most notable examples include the Arab Uprising in the Middle East, and India Against Corruption in India leading to monumental changes in the political equations of the respective countries.

Despite having the power to positively impact social and political discourse, these platforms have also become breeding grounds for division and conflict with the rise of misinformation, echo chambers, and polarization. Further, overwhelming content volume and the infinite feeds by these platforms push noise over valuable discussions. A research by Oxford Internet Institute indicates that social media platforms have been exploited by malicious actors to spread disinformation and manipulate public opinion, exacerbating societal divisions and undermining trust in democratic institutions.

As we navigate the complexities involved in social interactions, it is essential to explore how the power of social platforms can be leveraged to bridge divides, curb misinformation, foster understanding, preserve valuable discussions, and build actionable insights to promote harmony in our societies. Along with facilitating meaningful dialogues, future social media platforms need to create mechanisms to maintain civility and foster constructive conversations. There is a need for a futuristic social media platform that can address the algorithmic bias that amplifies polarizing content reinforcing existing biases. These biases lead to a fragmented public discourse, eroding the trust in democratic institutions.

Despite these challenges, there is hope that with the use of AI and machine learning, the potential of social media can be harnessed to bridge divides and foster understanding among diverse communities. One approach is to design algorithms that prioritize diverse perspectives and promote content that encourages empathy and mutual respect. By diversifying users' news feeds and exposing them to a broader range of viewpoints, social platforms can help break down echo chambers. This will encourage users to engage with alternative perspectives. The new age social media platform should be designed to curb biased, fabricated, and motivated content, and to promote factual and objective content. This will help foster objectivity and rationality in the discussions shaping democratic discourse of society. Initiatives that promote digital literacy and critical thinking skills are needed which can empower users to navigate online discourse more effectively and discern fact from fiction. By equipping individuals with the tools they need to evaluate information critically and engage in civil dialogue, we can create a more informed and resilient society.

Ultimately, the goal of social platforms should be to promote harmony and civil discourse in our democratic societies. This requires a collective effort from platform developers, policymakers, civil society organizations, and individual users. Platforms must prioritize transparency, accountability, and user safety, while also fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusivity. There is a need to create a platform that instead of eroding the democratic ethos of the society, adds value to the democratic discourse and upholds the ethical and democratic principles.

In an era marked by division and polarization, social platforms have the potential to serve as catalysts for positive change. By harnessing the power of technology and promoting values of empathy, respect, and inclusivity, we can build bridges across divides and foster a more harmonious and constructive democratic discourse in our societies. As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, let us work together to ensure that social platforms fulfill their promise as engines of progress, understanding, and unity in our vibrant democracies. Also, let us aspire for a social platform that can preserve valuable discussions leading to actionable insights and strengthening the democracy of the 21st century.
